As of 2025, the enquiry as to whether Skittles are suitable for Halal diets continues to be an area of exploration for many Muslims adhering to Halal dietary ethics.

Skittles, the legendary, eccentric, fruit-flavoured candies, have had various formulation changes over the years, leading to different views on their Halal status.

Understanding Halal Certification

In the Islamic faith, Halal refers to what is permissible or lawful. In relation to food products, this then dictates that they must be free from any elements obtained from forbidden substances, such as pig meat, animal rennet or alcohol, and must not contain ingredients considered impure.

Certification provided by a recognised Halal entity can ensure assurances that a product meets proper standards & criteria.

Skittles’ Ingredient Evolution

Previously, Skittles contained some ingredients that raised concerns among Halal orientated  patrons. Importantly, the use of E120, also known as cochineal or carmine—a red dye derived from insects—rendered the product not suitable for Muslims.

However, in 2019, the London Beth Din Kashrut Division (KLBD) announced that Skittles had changed their formulation, removing E120 and making specific varieties suitable for kosher diets. The KLBD stated:

“Skittles Crazy Sours, Fruits, Tropical, and Wild Berry were previously Not Kosher, but have changed formulation and are now approved Parev.”

This development led to a shift towards more inclusive ingredients, potentially aligning with Halal needs.

Manufacturer’s Position

Despite these changes, Mars Wrigley, the producer of Skittles, has not explicitly labelled Skittles as Halal-certified. In communications with consumers, the company has said:

“Unfortunately, we do not have a list of products suitable for a Halal diet. However, we do have many products within our range that are suitable for a vegetarian diet.”

This response suggests that while Skittles may not contain obvious non-Halal ingredients, the absence of formal Halal certification leaves room for individual discretion.

Considerations for Halal Consumers

For consumers adhering strictly to Halal dietary laws, the lack of official certification can be a significant factor. While the removal of E120 and the assurance of vegetarian-friendly ingredients are positive steps, other considerations include:

  • Cross-Contamination: Without Halal certification, there’s no guarantee against cross-contamination with non-Halal substances during manufacturing.
  • Ingredient Sources: Some ingredients, like flavourings or colourings, may have sources or processing methods that are not Halal-compliant.
  • Ethical Concerns: The use of certain additives, such as palm oil if used, may raise ethical issues for some consumers, though not directly related to Halal status.

Global Variations

It’s crucial to understand that Skittles’ ingredients can vary by location. For example, products marketed in Great Britain may differ from those in America or other areas.

Therefore, consumers should regularly check the ingredient list on the packaging and consult local Halal certification bodies for further guidance.

Currently, while Skittles have made ingredient changes that align more closely with Halal dietary requirements, the absence of official Halal certification from the manufacturer means that consumers must exercise personal judgment where relevant.

Reviewing ingredient lists, understanding potential cross-contamination risks, and consulting local Halal certification bodies can aid in making informed decisions about including Skittles in a Halal diet.

The Business Case For Halal For Companies To Consider

Having Halal certification on products presents a strong business case, particularly in an increasingly globalised market where Muslim consumers represent a significant and growing demographic.

The Halal food spectrum is estimated to be worth over $2 trillion, with demand rising across regions such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America.

A Halal certification ensures that products meet the dietary and ethical standards required by Muslim consumers, increasing brand trust and expanding market reach.

Beyond religious adherence, many non-Muslims also associate Halal products with higher quality, ethical sourcing, and stringent hygiene standards, further broadening the potential customer base.

Additionally, Halal certification can enhance a company’s reputation, opening doors to lucrative partnerships with retailers and distributors who cater to Halal-conscious consumers.

In a time where transparency and inclusivity are key to brand loyalty, obtaining Halal certification is not just an ethical or cultural consideration but a strategic move for businesses seeking to tap into an expanding and profitable market.
