Soy sauce is a core part of Asian dishes in the East, however for Muslims adhering to a Halal diet, a regular question rises to the surface, is it Halal? The answer relates to how it’s created.

Traditionally soy sauce is made through a process of fermentation, which can produce small trace amounts of alcohol as a by product.

This can lead to concerns because consuming intoxicating alcohol is not allowed in Islam.

However, not all soy sauces contains alcohol. Some of the brands might use a chemical methodology rather than fermentation, making it alcohol-free. If the amounts of alcohol are minute there is no real chance of intoxication so the product is generally seen as Halal.

A lot of companies now offer Halal-certified soy sauces that align with Islamic dietary principles.

In short, soy sauce can be Halal, even if it has small traces of alcohol which generally evaporate or disappear in the cooking process. However even though this might be the case some scholars say it is not allowed.
