How To Pray Witr

Witr prayer is a significant voluntary (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) prayer performed after the obligatory ‘Isha (night) prayer. Muslims pray five times a day known as Salah.
It is highly stressed by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), who rarely missed it, even when traveling. The term Witr is translated to mean “odd,” & the prayer consists of an odd number of rak‘ahs (units of prayer typically one, three, five, or more, but the most performed prayer is normally made up of three units.

Steps to Pray Witr:
- Make the Intention (Niyyah)
Silently intend in your heart to pray the Witr Salah for the sake of Allah (God). This is a important internal step before any act of worship. - Perform Two Rak‘ahs First
Begin by undertaking two regular rak‘ahs just like other prayers reciting Surah Al-Fatihah which is followed up by another Surah in both rak‘ahs, then followed by Rukoo‘ & Sujood. - Then Perform the Final Rak‘ah Separately (for 3-Rak‘ah Witr)
After completing the first two rak‘ahs & completing the Tashahhud, you stand up ready for the third rak‘ah. In this rak‘ah, after Surah Al-Fatihah & another Surah of your choice, you raise your hands & make the supplication of dua Qunoot. - Recite the Qunoot Supplication (Optional but Sunnah)
The Qunoot is a special du‘a (supplication) regularly recited in the final rak‘ah of Witr before going into Rukoo‘. - Complete the Prayer
After the dua Qunoot is complted, bow (Rukoo‘) & then complete the final rak‘ah of the prayer as normal with Sujood & Tashahhud, ending with Tasleem (saying Salaam to the right and left).
Witr prayer is an amazing method to end your day with spiritual reflection & connection with Allah (God). Though not mandatory, it is strongly recommended & holds immense reward (Sawab) for those who practice it on a regular basis.
