Seafood is very popular around the world and forms So when exploring the permissibility of eating crawfish (also known as crayfish) in the Islamic faith it is an area of scholarly discussions, framed in various interpretations of Islamic dietary guidelines.
The Holy Quran mentions:
“Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game and its use for food – for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel…” (Quran 5:96).

Considering this verse, a lot of Islamic thought leaders perceive all sea creatures to be Halal (permissible), therefore, including crawfish.

Islamic Scholars who hail from the Maliki, Shafi’i, & Hanbali schools of thought typically are in unison that crawfish are Halal.
They interpret the Quranic reference to seafood widely, therefore allowing the consumption of all animals that live in water, regardless of whether they resemble fish (Al-Nawawi, Al-Majmu’).
In line with these schools, since crawfish are aquatic & do not live on land, they fall under the area of permissible sea animals.
Alternatively, scholars from the Hanafi school of thought adopt a tighter interpretation. In line with their views to them, only fish (samak) are Halal from the ocean/sea, & other marine creatures, such as crawfish, shrimp, and crabs, are considered Haram (impermissible) (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Al-Kasani, Bada’i al-Sana’i). Crawfish, are crustaceans and not classified as fish & therefore not allowed according to this point of view.
Therefore, whether crawfish are Halal or not depends on the Islamic school of thought one aligns to.
Muslim communities are advised to consult knowledgeable scholars in their own localities for personalised guidance when faced with such dietary issues.
