Do M&M’s Contain Haram Ingredients?

At first glance, M&M’s don’t seem to have any general Haram (forbidden) ingredients. They mainly contain chocolate, sugar, milk, and food colouring. However, there are a few concerns:

  1. Gelatin – Some candies contain gelatin derived from non-Halal sources, but M&M’s do not contain gelatin.
  2. Carmine (E120) – Certain red food dyes come from crushed insects, making them non-Halal. M&M’s used to contain carmine in some regions, but most versions today use synthetic colorants instead.
  3. Vanilla Extract & Emulsifiers – Some emulsifiers and flavourings, like lecithin, can be derived from animal sources. However, most M&M’s use plant-based soy lecithin.
  4. Rennet in Milk Chocolate – The milk used in M&M’s chocolate could contain enzymes from non-Halal sources, making it questionable for strict Halal followers.

Are M&M’s Officially Halal Certified?

M&M’s do not carry a Halal certification in most countries. In fact, Mars (the company that makes M&M’s) has stated in some regions that their products are not Halal-certified.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they contain Haram ingredients—it just means they haven’t gone through official Halal verification.

As of February, 2025 the M&M’s official website FAQ’s section states:

Are M&M’S Kosher/Halal/Vegetarian?

M&M’S are not certified as Halal or Kosher. However, they do not contain any pork-based ingredients.

In general, M&M’S are suitable for vegetarians. Please note, however, that red M&M’S contain a non-vegetarian colouring.”

According to the official statement above on the M&M’s website the red M&M’s are not Halal and any M&M’s which contain Carmine (E120) are not suitable for those who follow a Halal diet.
