Are Smarties Halal?

Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp

Whether Smarties are Halal is related to where they are produced. In Britain & Canada, Nestlé’s Smarties are typically seen as Halal-friendly because they don’t include animal sourced ingredients like gelatine or carmine.

The Story:

Smarties are well known colourful sugar-coated chocolate candies which were first introduced by Rowntree’s of the United Kingdom in 1937.

At the time they were originally called “Chocolate Beans,” they were renamed to “Smarties” to avoid confusion with pharmaceutical items.

These candies fast became popular for their vibrant colours & crisp shell surrounding milk chocolate. In 1988, Rowntree’s was acquired and bought by the giant Nestlé, which expanded Smarties’ reach worldwide.

Over the decades, Smarties have evolved natural colourings replaced artificial dyes in 2006 & in 2005, the iconic cylindrical tube packaging was changed to a hexagonal shape.

Although quite similar to M&M’s in the U.S., Smarties have a unique texture as well as taste.

In contemporary times, they remain a well loved treat, especially in Europe & Canada, with continued popularity across different age groups.

However, white smarties are not Halal (See Below). Also, the brand isn’t officially certified as a Halal product. In the America, Smarties are manufactured by a different entity (Smarties Candy Company) and are generally Halal, as the ingredients have only plant-based and synthetic aspects.

If you are still not sure, it’s good advice to double check the packaging or contact the manufacturer for confirmation, since ingredients and manufacturing processes can change.
