Are Snails Halal?
Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp
Whether snails are Halal or not depends on how they are potentially classified within Islamic dietary guidelines, & scholars hold differing views. Typically, Islamic rulings about seafood land into two wide interpretations.
The Hanafi school of thought maintains that only creatures generally seen as “fish” are permissible, which leads to a lot of Hanafi scholars who consider snails both land & sea varieties as non- Halal the reason being they are not fish in the strict sense.
On the other hand, the Maliki, Shafi‘i & Hanbali schools generally permit all forms of sea life unless specifically prohibited & therefore marine snails are generally regarded as Halal.

“Are Snails Halal?
Question: 114855
What is the ruling on eating snails? Bear in mind that preparing snails dish requires cooking them alive! Were snails used as food during the era of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)?
Summary of answer
The permissibility of eating snails applies to both types, both land and sea snails. If they are cooked alive there is nothing wrong with that, because land snails have no blood and sea snails come under the general permissibility of sea game and food.”
