Are Wagon Wheels Halal?

We were asked by a member of the public to research and find out if Wagon Wheels are Halal?
Wagon Wheels are chocolate-coated snack cakes created with two soft biscuits bringing together a marshmallow & jam filling.
These biscuits are a well known treat in the UK, Australia, as well as Canada, also known for their chewy texture & nostalgic appeal.

We contacted Fox’s Burton’s Biscuit Company and asked them about their products in May 2025. In relation to their products being Halal or not they said:
“Dear Customer,
Thank you for your email regarding Wagon Wheels.
We can confirm that Wagon Wheels do contain Beef Gelatine (bovine) and are unfortunately not Halal certified. We are sensitive to the needs of our customers and as such most of our products, where possible are suitable for vegetarians, and do not contain unnecessary additives.
However, beef gelatine is used as the stabilising ingredient in the mallow centre of the wagon wheel and is integral to the product. We are unable to remove it or use an alternative gelatine type at this time that provides the same taste and texture.

The company has confirmed beef gelatine is used in the Wagon Wheel biscuit which is not sourced from a Halal animal. Therefore it is not suitable for a Halal diet. However other products by the company maybe suitable for a Halal diet. Please check the ingredients label to verify.
