As the requirement for Halal-certified food increases worldwide, especially among Muslim communities, many are enquiring: Is Bon Gelati ice cream Halal or not?
The phrase Halal, related to food, refers to elements that are permissible for Muslims to consume under Islamic dietary principles.

This includes the source of ingredients, the production methods & the absence of any forbidden (Haram) substances such as alcohol or gelatin obtained from non-Halal elements.

Currently, this ice cream does not have official Halal certification. This means the brand has not been formally verified by a recognized Islamic entity to clarify that all its components & processes comply with Halal standards.

But, that does not automatically render the items as Haram. A lot of the Bon Gelati’s items are made with common ice cream components such as milk, sugar, cocoa, vanilla as well as plant-based emulsifiers.
These are typically seen as Halal, provided there are no hidden animal-based additives or aspects such as alcohol.
The apprehension often revolves around additives like mono & diglycerides, which can be obtained from either plant or animal sources, as well as flavourings that might include alcohol.

Without certification or clear labelling, it can be quite hard to understand the exact source of these components in Bon Gelati items.
For Muslim customers who value Halal-compliance, it’s best to get in touch with the producer directly or consult with local Islamic entities who may have conducted their own assessments.
Some consumers also report specific Bon Gelati varieties (such as fruit-based sorbets) being more likely to meet Halal requirements due to their more basic, plant-based compositions.
We contacted Schwarz Produktion in regards to enquiring about the Halal status of Bon Gelati ice cream they responded on 19/6/25 and stated:
“We have received your inquiry regarding our Bon Gelati products and are happy to provide further information.
We can inform you that our products are not halal certified.
Our ice cream range, which we currently ship to Great Britain, contains no animal-derived ingredients other than milk and eggs.
The milk ingredients come exclusively from cow’s milk and microbial rennet is used to produce the whey product.
The emulsifiers used are manufactured without the use of animal ingredients.
We can inform you that alcohol is used, for example, in our Rum Raisin and Tiramisu flavors. The alcohol is listed in the list of ingredients in accordance with food law.
No alcohol is added as an ingredient to our non-alcoholic ice cream flavors at any time during production.
However, we would like to point out that these products may still contain traces of alcohol. This cannot be completely avoided for technological reasons.
The alcohol in traces serves as a solvent for certain flavours, which e.g. are not soluble in water. It is only through the use of alcohol that the flavours can be introduced into the ice cream. However, the alcohol content in the final product is low, so a declaration on the label isn’t necessary.
We hope our answer has been helpful. Should you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
