This rule revolves around a verse in the Holy Qur’an, which stipulates:
“Lawful to you is what you catch from the sea and use for food as provision for yourselves and the travelers…” (Qur’an 5:96).
This wider allowance makes fish & other sea creatures permissible for Muslims to eat, provided they are caught alive & die naturally or are slaughtered in line with Halal guidelines.

But, there are slight differences in interpretation amongst Islamic schools of thought. For example, the Hanafi school permits only fish with scales, whereas the Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools allow all types of seafood, which also includes shellfish.

It is also imperative to note that how fish is prepared matters. Frying, grilling, or even cooking fish is permissible, but Muslims must be careful and avoid cross-contamination with non-Halal components, such as pork or alcohol-based sauces.
Therefore, fish is mainly seen as Halal in Islam, making it a safe & healthy dietary choice for Muslim communities.
Understanding the small differences between schools of thought & making sure proper preparation can help maintain alignment to Halal ethics while enjoying a range of tasty seafood.
