Later this month on the 9th of June the UK Parliament is due to discuss a petition which proposes a ban on non-stun slaughter practices, which include Halal meat.

This particular slaughter method, where animals are not rendered unconscious before slaughter, is allowed for religious purposes, which can be found in Halal & kosher meat production processes.

The petition, has gathered over 115,000+ signatures & reflects growing public concern over animal welfare & calls for legislative change to mandate stunning prior to slaughter.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) supports the petition, reverting to scientific studies indicating that animals experience pain when not stunned before slaughter.

They stress that their position is based on animal welfare considerations, not religious beliefs & note that the majority, 80% of Halal meat in the UK comes from animals that are pre-stunned.

However the research is not final, as the Muslim position states otherwise in regards to animal slaughter and have a strong opinion that the Zabiha (slaughter) process when done according to Islamic Shariah is the most humane and effective methodology for slaughtering animals.

On the other hand, religious groups have expressed concern that banning non-stun slaughter could infringe upon their religious freedoms and rights. These groups argue that such a ban would stop them from consuming meat prepared according to their religious traditions.
