Is Halloumi Halal?

Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp

Halloumi is a semi hard, salty cheese that hails from the medditaranean nation of Cyprus & is now popular around the globe for its rich flavour & high melting point, which makes it great for grilling or even frying.

When it comes to whether halloumi is Halal, the answer relates to how the cheese is made & the components used during its creation.

Cheese is generally made using milk, salt, & rennet an enzyme that helps the milk solidify. The source of this rennet is the crucial element in determining if halloumi is Halal or not.

If the rennet is taken from animals that were not slaughtered in line with Islamic law, then the cheese would not be seen as Halal.

However, if the rennet is obtained from a Halal slaughtered animal or from a microbial or plant-based source, then the halloumi would be Halal & permissible to consume.

Is Halloumi Halal?

In modern times, many manufacturers make Halal certified halloumi using microbial or vegetarian rennet & these items are often clearly labeled as “Halal” or “suitable for vegetarians.”

Muslims consumers who want to make sure their cheese is permissible should read the packaging for Halal certification or confirm the source of the rennet with the producer.

Therefore, halloumi itself is not automatically Halal or haram it revolves entirely around the components & the production methodology.

With increasing worldwide demand, Halal certified halloumi is now regularly available, making it easier for consumers to enjoy this versatile cheese with full confidence.
