Are Haribos Halal in the UK? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you enjoy tasty gummy sweets, it’s possible that you may have come across Haribos. They’re one of the most well known and recognisable candy brands across the globe, known for their chewy texture and fruity flavours. But if you follow a Halal diet like me and our team, you might be contemplating:

Are Haribos Halal in the UK?

The Halal status of Haribo’s in Britain depends on the specific item you’re purchasing. While some Haribo sweets are actually Halal, others contain pork-derived gelatine, making them unsuitable & Haram for Muslims consumers who adhere to strict Halal dietary ethics.

Conceptualising Gelatine in Haribos

One of the biggest concerns for Halal-conscious consumers is gelatine, a well known ingredient in gummy sweets. Standard Haribo sweets in the UK often contain pork-based gelatine, which is not Halal.

However, Haribo does produce Halal-certified options, but they’re not as widely available in regular UK supermarkets.

How to Identify Halal Haribos

If you’re looking for Halal Haribo in the UK, here’s what to do:

  1. Check the Packaging – Haribo’s Halal-certified products will showcase a visible Halal logo on the packets. If you don’t see a Halal logo, it’s likely not Halal.
  2. Read the Ingredients – Look for the type of gelatine used. If it simply says “gelatine” without mentioning the source, it’s most likely pork-based. Halal versions will use beef gelatine from a Halal-certified source or it can be a vegetarian source.
  3. Shop at Halal Stores – Some Halal stores and online shops stock Haribo Halal-certified sweets, often imported from countries such as Turkey, where Haribo stocks a Halal range.

We contacted Haribo’s in February 2025 and asked them the question are Haribo’s Halal? They replied:

“Thank you for contacting HARIBO with your enquiry.

As the UK’s leading gums and jellies brand, we do have a dedicated Product Development Team, which are constantly looking into innovations that will bring something new to the marketplace. As we are constantly producing new and exciting treats our list is ever changing and extensive. We hope therefore, that the following information will be of use to you.

The gelatine we use in the manufacture of our products is derived from Pork. This includes our MAOAM range, manufactured by our sister Company in Germany and our Chamallows range, manufactured by our sister Company in Belgium.

The only exception would be our Halal products, here beef gelatine is used, and the products are clearly marked. Halal products are manufactured in Turkey and imported direct into the UK.

UK factory codes begin L441 and L442, shown on the reverse of the packaging. In the UK we produce some products that are totally free from animal gelatine and include modified starch which can be found in our clearly marked Vegetarian range.

You can see our treats on our website https://www.haribo.com/en-gb which includes all product details and the nutritional values of each pack.

Thank you again for your interest in our products and we hope this answers your concerns.

Where Can You Find Halal Haribos?

In the UK, many mainstream supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, and Sainsbury’s mainly stock the regular, non-Halal Haribo versions. However, you can often find Halal-certified Haribo in:

  • Halal grocery stores
  • Online retailers like Amazon or Islamic food shops
  • Turkish or Middle Eastern shops, where Halal Haribo is more common

The Verdict

So, are Haribos Halal in the UK?

Some are, but not all. Always check the packaging, buy from trusted Halal locations where possible, and be observant for Halal certification just to be sure. If in doubt, there are plenty of other Halal-friendly sweet options to choose from!
