Is Kosher Gelatin Halal?

Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp

The Halal classification of kosher gelatin is based around where it is derived from & processed. Gelatin, which is sourced from animal collagen, can only be obtained from Halal sources & be slaughtered according to Islamic principles.

Kosher gelatin which comes from fish & plants is typically Halal, some kosher certifiers may allow gelatin which is derived from non-Halal sources, which might include improperly slaughtered cattle or possibly even pigs.

The Muslim community should aim to verify packaging, opting for Halal-certified items or those specifying fish or plant-based gelatin to make sure there is full compliance with Islamic faith-based principles.

Question: Is kosher gelatin halal?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and states.

The answer is, it depends on the source of the gelatin. If it is from slaughtered kosher meat, it would be halal since the meat is halal. If it is from fish or vegetarian sources, it is of course halal.

If however it is from pig or an unslaughtered animal, ‘kosher gelatin’ would not be halal. This would have to be ascertained by the appropriate source (whether the company or the Rabbi that approves, etc).

And Allah knows best.
wassalam
