In Islamic dietary guidelines, Halal relates to what is permissible or ok to eat in relation to the Quran & Hadith. One typical question among Muslims is whether rabbit meat is seen as Halal.

The simple answer is yes, rabbit meat is typically seen as Halal in the Islamic faith. There is no literature in the Quran or authentic Hadith that does not allow for the consumption of rabbit.

In contrast there are multiple narrations indicating that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) & his companions consumed rabbit meat.

For example, in a hadith located in Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim, it is stated that a companion of the Prophet (pbuh) hunted a rabbit & gave some of its meat away to the Prophet (pbuh), which the Prophet (pbuh) accepted & ate.

Rabbits are herbivores & do not have fangs or claws. In line with Islamic guidelines, animals that are permissible to eat must not be carnivores or scavengers.

Since rabbits do not enter into these prohibited categories, they are allowed for consumption.

However, for rabbit meat to be truly Halal, it must be slaughtered according to Islamic principles. This includes invoking the name of Allah (God) at the time of slaughter & making sure the animal is killed in a humane & swift manner with a sharp blade, severing the throat, windpipe & blood vessels.

Cultural preferences may vary & in some Muslim regions, rabbit meat is not commonly consumed not because it is Haram, but simply due to local cuisine tastes or unfamiliarity.

However, from a religious perspective, there is no restrictions which are applied.

Therefore, rabbit meat is Halal & permissible for Muslims to eat, provided it is slaughtered in line with Islamic ethics. It provides a healthy & lean source of protein for those who choose to make it a part of their diet.
