Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp

The issue of whether Spam is Halal or not is related to its ingredients & how it is made. Spam, is a canned meat item created by Hormel Foods, which traditionally includes pork & pork-derived components, which are not allowed to be consumed in Islamic dietary guidelines. Pork meat is seen as Haram in the Islamic faith, regardless of how it is actually prepared or manufactured.

Spam canned meat first came onto the scene in 1937 as an affordable & convenient protein source. It obtained global popularity during the second World War. It was then transported to Allied troops as well as civilian groups due to its long shelf life & portability.

Over a period of time, Spam became very popular in spots such as Hawaii, South Korea & the Philippines, where it remains a common food source in many local dishes.

However, in modern times, certain varieties of Spam have been made in different nations, using meats such as chicken or turkey-based versions, specifically targeting markets with Muslim customers.

Muslims who wish to eat Spam-like items should endeavour to check the packaging carefully for standard Halal certification from a well known reputable authority.

If such certification is not present, even poultry-based Spam may not necessarily meet Halal requirements, as contamination during manufacturing or use of non-Halal ingredients can arise.

Therefore, the original pork orientated Spam is not Halal, but Halal certified alternatives do actually exist, predominantly in Muslim countries.

The ruling essentially depends on the specific item & its certification, so it is always a good idea and best to verify before actual consumption.
