Manchester: Magnum is a well known, renowned brand across the world.
It is complemented for its rich, indulgent flavours & classic chocolate coating. As a Muslim living in the UK I recently popped into my local supermarket and picked up a box of Magnum Ice Cream but I wasn’t sure if it was Halal or not, so decided to delve into the product to find out more.

The Halal position of the ice cream differs country by country. A range of Magnum ice creams are certified as Halal, on the other hand others may include ingredients which are not suitable for Muslim consumption due to dietary laws.

What Makes Ice Cream Halal?
For an ice cream to be determined as Halal, it should align with the following criteria:
- No non-Halal animal-derived ingredients: This also includes gelatine, rennet, or emulsifiers sourced from non-Halal sources.
- No alcohol-based flavourings: A range of vanilla extracts & some flavour enhancers might make use of alcohol in their product cycle.
- Halal production process: Magnum should not be cross contaminated with non-Halal ingredients during production processes.

The Halal Food Authority (HFA), stipulates for a product to be awarded Halal certification, the ingredients as well as the manufacturing process must comply with the Islamic faith’s dietary laws (HFA, 2024).

Halal Certification
The Halal position of the ice cream is mainly related to the country it is sold in:
- United Kingdom: Many Magnum products are Halal-certified and listed under Unilever’s Halal product section (Unilever UK, 2024). However not all products maybe Halal.
- Malaysia & Indonesia: Magnum ice creams are Halal-certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) (JAKIM, 2024).
- Middle East: Magnum is widely available as a Halal product, certified by local Halal authorities.
- Europe & North America: Some Magnum products may contain alcohol-based vanilla extract or non-Halal emulsifiers. In some cases, the manufacturing process may involve cross-contamination.

We visited the UK website and checked the FAQ section which stated:
Currently none of our Magnum ice cream products are Halal certified. However, we do work with the GMWA, supplying product information to them, in order for the GMWA to determine whether our products can be consumed by Muslims. This is purely the opinion of the GMWA and not the opinion of Unilever UK and Ireland. We hope that by working with the GMWA Muslim consumers can make an informed decision about our products.
