Is Deer Halal?
Edited By Staff Writer, Halal Incorp
Deer meat, similar to a lot of other meats, is typically Halal in Islam, provided specific aspects are adhered to during the animal’s slaughter process.
The phrase “Halal” translates to “permissible” or “lawful” in the Arabic language & it refers to anything that is allowed under Islamic law. In contrast, “Haram” is the opposite meaning something which is forbidden.

For meat to be Halal, the animal has to be slaughtered in line with the Islamic method known as Zhabihah. This includes a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife across the neck, cutting the jugular vein, carotid artery & windpipe.

This process is intended to be as humane as possible, making sure the animal’s rapid unconsciousness & the thorough draining of blood, which is considered impure & not permissible.
In addition to this, the animal must be alive as well as healthy at the time of slaughter. The slaughter must be undertaken by a Muslim & the name of Allah (God) must be read (e.g., by saying “Bismillah” – “In the name of Allah”) at the time the slaughter takes place.

The animal should not have been stunned prior to slaughter in a way that would render it dead or leave it unconscious before the slaughter process begins.
Deer are herbivores & do not eat meat their consumption is not inherently prohibited in the Quran or Sunnah (the teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammed pbuh).
As long as the deer is hunted or raised & then slaughtered in line with Zhabihah principles, its meat is permissible for Muslims to eat. This makes venison a Halal option also for those who follow Islamic dietary ethics.
