Gelatine is a well used component found in many food items, from desserts like jelly & marshmallows to pharmaceuticals as well as cosmetics.

Gelatine is a protein taken from collagen, which is generally derived from the skin, bones, & connective tissues of animals. Most of the commercially produced gelatine globally comes from pigs (porcine gelatine) or cattle (bovine gelatine).

Porcine gelatine is unequivocally Haram (forbidden) in the Islamic faith, as pigs & all their by-products are considered impure. Therefore, any product containing porcine gelatine is not permissible for Muslims to consume.
Bovine gelatine, can be considered Halal, but only if the cattle were slaughtered in line with Islamic guidelines. This then revolves around the animal being healthy, killed by a swift cut to the throat while reciting the name of Allah (God) & all blood must be drained accordingly.

If the bovine gelatine is sourced from animals not slaughtered according to Zhabihah, or from animals considered impermissible for other reasons, then it would be seen as Haram.
To ensure gelatine is Halal, customers should look for certifications from reputable Islamic organisations. These certifications allude to the gelatine being sourced & processed in line with Islamic law.
Moreover, fish gelatine or plant-based gelling agents (agar-agar, carrageenan, pectin) are naturally Halal & offer suitable substitutes for those seeking to avoid animal-derived gelatine altogether.
