A railway worker hailing from east London, Rizwan Javed, has been granted an MBE for his exceptional efforts in preventing 29 individuals from attempting suicide since 2015. Javed, employed at the MTR Elizabeth line stationed at Ealing Broadway, achieved this feat by remaining vigilant and reaching out to people in distressing circumstances.

Javed, 33 years old, not only carries out his life-saving duties at the railway station but also utilizes social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to share his experiences, aspiring to inspire others.

His dedication to preventing suicides is rooted in the training he received nearly a decade ago from the Samaritans, where he acquired essential skills in identifying vulnerable individuals, engaging in meaningful conversations, and guiding them to safety.

Recalling his first application of this training just two days after completing it, Javed intervened to prevent someone from taking their own life at a station. In 2019, he received the Samaritans Lifesaver Award, recognizing individuals who have used their communication skills to save lives.

Formerly associated with Great Western Railway (GWR), Javed emphasizes the emotional impact of his interventions, as those he assists come from diverse age groups. Reflecting on his Asian background, he notes the lack of awareness about mental health, with traditional approaches often involving simple remedies like a paracetamol.

Breaking these barriers and fostering conversations about mental health, both at work and at home, has served as a personal coping mechanism for Javed.

Upon learning of his MBE appointment through a letter, Javed, initially half-asleep, was urged by his enthusiastic mother to open the communication. The award has not only surprised him but has also boosted his confidence, motivating him to extend his efforts on a broader scale.
